C&O/B&O IN COLOR Bob Withers 128 pages hardcover

As the merger scene in the eastern United States heated up in the early 1960s with Erie Lackawanna, N&W-NKP-Wabash, and talk of Penn Central, a union of a different type occurred between the Chesapeake& Ohio and the Baltimore & Ohio. While not yet a true merger for several reasons, the affiliation was dubbed C&O/B&O and quite visible trackside during the 1960s on timetables, advertisements, corporate reports, and especially trackside where C&O and B&O locomotives began mixing it up, especially on the B&O. C&O FOR PROGRESS THE CHESAPEAKE & OHIO RAILWAY AT MID-CENTURY Thomas Dixon 160 pages hardcover

Following WWII, C&O embarked on a program of innovation, improvements, research and development that placed it at the forefront of progressive railroads, and even devised a new logo that incorporated the words _For Progress.' Under the able leadership of President Walter J. Tuohy most of this period, the line really reached the apogee of its strength, power, and importance as America_s number one bituminous coal hauler. With Michigan lines it also became the largest hauler of automobiles and parts, and competed on a par with even the biggest railroads in its operations and efficiency. During 1945-1954 the mercurial Robert R. Young held sway as chairman and made C&O a household word with his flamboyant public relations tactics. This book details all this using as a basis the detailed articles presented in _Modern Railroads' magazine in November 1954, and adding to that additional information on the steam-diesel transition, the shops, yards, the cars and locomotives of the era, and the trains and their operations. CAJON RAIL PASSAGE TO THE PACIFIC Chard Walker hardcover

The busy and dramatic Cajon Pass, entrance and exit for Southern California traffic of both the Santa Fe and Union Pacific, has never been better presented than by the long-time Summit operator, Chard Walker. In 1885, the California Southern Railroad, backed by the Santa Fe, completed its route through Cajon Pass, creating the legendary rail passage to the Pacific that survives today as a great artery of commerce. In 1905 Union Pacific became a tenant of the Pass, and in 1967 Southern Pacific built its own trackage over almost the same route. The construction and particularly the operation of this line, down through the years, are presented in some detail in this book. This is the complete story of Cajon Pass in words and photos, augmented by the superb cartography of John Signor. This book takes you from the very beginning up to the 1980s; the lore was gathered and the facts written by a railroader and railfan who was there at the right time. Charlie1

CALGARY'S ELECTRIC TRANSIT Colin Hatcher & Tom Schwarzkopf 232 pages softcover

Calgary_s Electric Transit is the story of electric street railway, trolleybus and light rail vehicle transit in Canada_s western city of Calgary, Alberta. Through its forty years of street railway service, Calgary acquired passenger cars from such well-known Canadian builders as Ottawa Car Manufacturing Company, Preston Car & Coach Company, and the Canadian Car & Foundry. In addition, the system_s roster included used cars from several sources in the United States. Totalling 113 cars in all _ plus a scenic car _ it has been a daunting task to secure photos for this book. Many superb images have been discovered, illustrating the operation of streetcars in different sections of the city. There are over 150 streetcar photos. Finding trolleybus photographs has been a challenge as well, but the authors have succeeded in gathering a fine selection representing all classes of 'trackless trolley' coaches purchased new and acquired used from other US systems. You_ll see streetcars and trolleybuses operating in the city centre, in the rural suburbs, and in residential neighbourhoods. Coverage of today_s modern rail transit cars is outstanding. Now called 'light rail vehicles', all classes of these LRVs are represented, operating in all seasons, and over most portions of the system, illustrating the many varied and unique Calgary urban environments. Rich, carefully composed black and white photos are rounded out with a fine showing of subjects in colour. There_s a variety of photos to interest everyone with an interest in the development of Calgary as a city: the construction of 'The Bay', early scenes in Bowness Park, and some views of the streetcars serving seemingly unpopulated fields that today are thriving subdivisions. CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR -AN ENTERTAINING HISTORY OF AMERICA'S MOST CELEBRATED TRAIN ROUTE John Kelly 126 pages pages softcover

America's most talked-about train, the California Zephyr was inaugurated March 20, 1949, book-ended by the world-class skylines of Chicago and San Francisco. Operated in partnership over three railroads; Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Denver & Rio Grande, and Western Pacific, the train was designed in Art Deco style and built of Shotwelded stainless-steel by the Budd Company. The California Zephyr incorporated the best of the Zephyr fleet including Vista-Dome coaches and Vista-Dome observation cars. Powered by General Motors diesel locomotives the western themed "land-cruise" train traveled 2,532 miles on its journey from Chicago traversing the spectacular Colorado Rockies via the 6.2-mile Moffat Tunnel and California's magnificent Feather River Canyon - by daylight in both directions. Vintage equipment diagrams include California Zephyr baggage car, Vista-Dome coach, Vista-Dome buffet-dormitory car, dining car, bedroom-cabin car and Vista-Dome bedroom-buffet-lounge-observation car. Other highlights feature original trip reports by "Zephyrette" hostesses, travel brochures, timetables, dining car menus and full-color photo gallery of the stunning California Zephyr.

CALIFORNIA'S CAPITOL CORRIDOR Matthew Vurek 96 pages softcover

The Capitol Corridor is the name of the Amtrak passenger train route between California s capital, Sacramento, and San Jose, the state s first capital upon admission to the Union in 1850. The scenery between these two areas highlights vastly different land uses; examples include an industrialized shoreline covered with a forest of petroleum refineries, urban areas transitioning from industrial to residential use, and a wildlife refuge disturbed only by the passage of trains. The Capitol Corridor is now an integral part of the transportation scene in Northern California. Since 1991, its equipment and infrastructure have evolved to keep pace with technology as well as the area s dynamic economic and social environment. Charlie1

CALIFORNIA'S LUMBER SHORTLINE RAILROADS Jeff Moore 176 pages softcover

California's sawmill and railroad industries grew up together, each at least partially depending upon the other for survival. However, not all of the Golden State's sawmills lay upon the routes of mainline railroads, resulting in the development of a number of shortline railroads connecting remote sawmills with the nation's rail network. In addition to serving the lumber industry, these shortlines often became economic lifelines to other industries in rural parts of the state. Many of these railroads also carried passengers, either as part of their common carrier service in the early years and/or as tourists in recent decades. This book seeks to tell the stories of and relate the important historical roles these small carriers played, long lasting companies such as the Almanor, Amador Central, Arcata & Mad River, California Western, Camino Placerville & Lake Tahoe, McCloud River, Quincy, Sierra, and Yreka Western, along with younger start-ups such as the Eureka Southern, North Coast, Great Western, Modoc Northern, Lake County, Lake Railway, and others.
