Now
in its second printing of the Boston & Maine railroad, Stan
Trzoniec continues with the Fitchburg Division of this famous
railroad. Stretching from Ayer, Massachusetts to over the border to
Rotterdam Junction, New York, classic color and black and white
photographs with the complete history of the line are featured in
this upgraded edition.
Starting
in Ayer, Massachusetts, you can observe how the old station in the
1920s incorporated a large crossover complex with a unique signaling
array and interchange. Moving west, we run by Fitchburg with Gardner
coming up fast, then on to Baldwinville, Royalston, Millers Falls,
Montague arriving at the yard in East Deerfield --- still one of the
hot spots on the line. From old color slides, we document a long
list of Boston & Maine motive power and some of the older
structures rarely seen in the railroad books today. Most of the
towns along the line are featured in an easy to follow format with
the Hoosac Tunnel complete with rare photos of the surrounding area
including photos of the electric engines that plied the rails helping
steam engines through the bore. Out of the tunnel, North Adams is
next, Johnsonville is featured, then into Vermont, Mechanicville and
finally Rotterdam, NY.
