This is the complete story of the Chesapeake and Ohio's Superpower 4-8-4 locomotives, the Class J-3 and J-3a Greenbriers. Used primarily between Hinton, WV and Charlottesville, VA, these 12 locomotives were the mainstay of C&O passenger service in the mountains from 1935 onward. Beginning with the Greenbriers antecedents, the 4-6-2 and 4-8-2 passenger locomotives, this book covers the development, testing and service of the first group of J-3s, Nos. 600-604, the wartime second order of Nos. 605 & 606 and the post war delivery of J-3as Nos. 610-614, through to their retirement in the early 1950s. This book also covers the rebirth of J-3a No. 614 in the 1980s.
