Hollywood's Railroads, Volume One: Virginia & Truckee chronicles locomotives and rolling stock from Nevada's famous Silver Short Line. Built between 1869 and 1872, the V&T connected the rich mines of the Comstock Lode at Virginia City with the state capitol at Carson City and the transcontinental mainline in Reno. The mining boom ended about 1880 and the V&T became a marginal operation for decades, subsidized by sentimentaland benevolent owners, who remembered the boom days fondly. When the last of them passed away, it survived by liquidating assets, including a treasure trove of antique locomotives and rolling stock. Between 1937 and 1947, four steam locomotives and more than twodozen passenger and freight cars were sold to motion picture studios. While most of this equipment is now in museums, one of the locomotives still makes occasional film appearances. Their story is illustrated with more than one hundred and fifteen photos.
