This book describes the history of the Middletown, Unionville & Water Gap Railroad from its inception until
it was reorganized as the Middletown & Unionville Railroad. We then follow the M&U until it is superseded by
the Middletown & New Jersey Railway. Both the M&U and M&NJ faced the prospect of abandonment but
today’s Middletown & New Jersey Railroad has no such fears as it has evolved into a much larger corporation
that now serves much of New York State’s Orange County including operations on track segments once owned
by the Erie/EL, L&HR, NYS&W, NYNH&H and O&W. The eighty-year diesel era is chronicled extensively.
