New Book
Bob Schmidt and Michael Caramanna 128 pages hardcover

From the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California in the West to the Gulf of Mexico in the East, and from the U.S. Border in the North to the Yucatan Peninsula in the South, this new title features the passenger services of Mexico. Major express trains such as the AZTEC EAGLE and connecting lines such as the Coahuila and Zacatecas narrow gauge railroad are included. Also featured are examples of motive power including steam, diesel and electric, plus three streetcar lines. The trains were equipped with a fascinating variety of mostly hand-me-down passenger equipment that changed quite a bit over the nearly 60-year period (1961-2017) covered by these photos.

Wonderful selection and quality of photos, and great (informative) captions. Covers most major routes and trains, as well as lesser sites. I rode many of these trains during visits in the 1960s and 70s, and this is the first book that satisfies me about Mexican railroads (national coverage). Focus is 1960s through 1980s, even with some steam and narrow gauge material. Final comment: people and contexts are included, not just locomotives and machinery.
