Railroads have been a popular theme in folk music for many years, particularly in the United States. Railroads helped to connect people and places, and their impact on society is reflected in many folk songs. Interestingly, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, directly or indirectly, is used as the subject of at least twenty songs covering a wide range of themes – perhaps more than any other single railroad. Some of these songs may be familiar to the reader, many others are obscure and may have never been recorded. Each song is discussed using available material, lyrics and musical score (if available), C&O history associated with the events in the song (if relevant), when and who recorded (or published) the song. In some situations a song may have been published under different titles, and it is also known that some performers changed their names during their career further complicating the song’s pedigree. Some songs that have been included in this work are not strictly considered folk songs, but have been included because of their relationship to the C&O. As the reader will find within this work, “The Mighty C&O” lives on in music to this day.
