A 1903 law prohibiting the use of steam locomotives in Manhattan became the catalyst that started the predecessor companies of the New York Central and New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroads on the path to electrification. Starting with that era, the book tells the story of the massive electrification projects of both railroads with special emphasis on the new Grand Central Terminal that opened in 1913 and continues to serve the public today. In addition to the NYC's electrification, the book explains the role of the New Haven RR and its electrification system. Coverage continues to the present day operation of the lines by the Metro-North RR and the extension of the Harlem Line electrification from North White Plains to Southeast, north of Brewster.
