Volume 1 begins with a sampling of the final year of the Reading as an independent
company and continues with a look at the first seven years of the railroad as an important
component of the new Conrail system. We see the multi-color motive power of early Conrail
gradually transforming into CR “dress blue” with more variety provided by the diesels of the
Delaware & Hudson, whose trackage rights over the Reading continued into the Conrail era.
