Jack Pfeifer retired from the Union Pacific as a Senior Claims Agent
in 1982, and remained active in a variety of railroad-related
organizations. This book is divided into chapters of the places Jack
worked or visited: Council Bluffs is first, followed by Nebraska,
Colorado, and Wyoming, with particular emphasis on the UP's main line
over Sherman Hill during the steam-to-diesel (and turbine) transition
era.
An unexpected treasure in the middle of the book is a 34-page
section, all in color, of Colorado narrow gauge photos in the early
1950s, almost half of them on the Rio Grande Southern.
While Union Pacific has center stage here, the roads featured
include Chicago & North Western, Chicago Great Western, Milwaukee
Road, Rock Island, Burlington, Santa Fe, Illinois Central, Missouri
Pacific, Great Northern, Soo Line, Southern Pacific, and Spokane,
Portland and Seattle.
