The "Beach" referred to in the title is Sylvan Beach, NY, a small
community located on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake northeast of
Syracuse, NY. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the "Coney
Island of Central New York" was the summertime destination for crowds of
fun seekers from as far away as Albany, Buffalo and Scranton. The
development and eventual success of Sylvan Beach was due to the New York
& Oswego Midland (reorganized as the New York, Ontario &
Western) and, to a lesser degree, the Lehigh Valley Railroad. At the
height of its popularity, O&W and LV on-line ridership was augmented
by throngs delivered by connections with the New York Central, the West
Shore, and the Central's extensive interurban system.
