In 2026, Metra is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Metra Electric’s electrification. In 1926, a huge civic celebration was held with parades, a pageant, and dinner at the Palmer House. Knowledge of this magnificent event and IC’s contentious 70-year relationship with the City of Chicago leading up to the electrification has been lost in history.

IC created the lakefront from the Chicago River to Hyde Park. Through a series of ordinances, the City of Chicago forced IC to fill in Lake Michigan. Everything east of Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago and the recreational areas along Lake Michigan south to 51st Street are all built on what was Lake Michigan.

Dispatch 16, A Celebration of 100th Anniversaries also commemorates the 100th anniversaries of South Shore Line’s re-electrification, which forged a vital link between Northwest Indiana and Chicago, and the opening of North Shore Line’s Skokie Valley Route, which created a high-speed railroad between Chicago and Milwaukee.
